Social media means websites and apps where people share short posts, photos, and videos with followers and the public: platforms such as the ones you likely already use in daily life. Good marketing work starts with finding one clear audience and sharpening one clear message. This lesson takes that same audience and that same message and puts them to work on social media, one of the channels almost every marketing plan uses. This lesson also asks you to think like a blind social media user twice over: once as someone drafting a post, and once as someone who has spent real time on these platforms encountering images with missing or badly written descriptions. That second perspective is not a side note in this lesson. It is one of the most valuable professional skills you bring to any job that touches social media, because you already know, firsthand, what a screen reader user needs from a post that a sighted writer might never think to ask.
Why Social Media Accessibility Varies by Platform and Changes Over Time
Every major social media platform is a computer program built and updated by a company, and every one of those companies redesigns its app and website on its own schedule, often several times a year. A platform that reads cleanly with a screen reader today can change its layout next month in an update that breaks something that used to work, such as a button that used to have a clear spoken label losing that label, or a new feature shipping with no accessible way to reach it yet. The reverse also happens: a platform that used to be difficult can improve sharply after a company invests real effort in accessibility work. Because of this, this lesson will not tell you that one specific platform is currently the most accessible, or the least accessible. Any such claim would likely be out of date by the time you read it, and this course does not want to teach you something that could mislead you later.
Instead, this lesson teaches you something that stays true no matter how any one platform changes: a reliable method for checking a platform's accessibility for yourself, right now, using tools you already know. This is the same durable habit worth building whenever you approach any unfamiliar AI tool or website: instead of memorizing one fixed description of an interface that might change, you learn to explore an unfamiliar screen using your own screen reader's navigation tools, such as its list of headings, links, and interactive elements (sometimes called an elements list) and its heading-by-heading navigation command, so you can find your way around confidently no matter what the interface looks like on any given day. Check your own screen reader's documentation for the exact keystrokes these tools use, since they differ from product to product. Social media platforms deserve that same approach, and arguably need it even more, since they tend to change with unusual frequency.
Evaluating a Platform's Accessibility Yourself
Before you invest real time posting on any social media platform, spend a few minutes exploring it the same way you would explore any unfamiliar AI tool or website. Three tools do most of the work. First, your screen reader's list of links, headings, and interactive elements (often called an elements list) lets you see every heading, link, button, and form field on the current screen in one organized list, so you can quickly judge whether the platform's buttons have clear, spoken labels such as "Like," "Comment," and "Share," rather than unlabeled icons that your screen reader can only announce as "button" or "clickable" with no further information. Check your screen reader's documentation for the exact command that opens this list. Second, heading navigation — most screen readers let you jump from heading to heading with a single key while browsing a webpage, and mobile screen readers typically offer a similar rotor or navigation setting — shows you whether the platform organizes its screen with real headings a screen reader can jump between, or whether the whole screen is one long block you have to read from the very top every time. Again, check your own screen reader's documentation for its exact heading-navigation command. Third, every major platform publishes some kind of accessibility statement or help center article describing its current screen reader support. Search the platform's own help center for the word "accessibility" and read what the company currently says, remembering that even a company's own statement can lag behind reality in either direction, so treat it as one more piece of evidence, not the final word.
Combine what you learn from these three checks with your own experience actually using the app. If a platform announces clearly labeled buttons, organizes its screen with real headings, and its own help center describes active accessibility work, that is a good sign. If buttons are unlabeled, headings are missing, and no accessibility information exists anywhere in the help center, treat that as a real warning sign worth factoring into how much you rely on that platform. Either way, plan to repeat this check occasionally, especially after a platform announces a redesign, since today's good result is not a permanent guarantee.
Writing Platform-Appropriate Posts with AI
A marketing message does not have to change its meaning to work on different platforms, but it usually does need to change its shape. A sharp, clear core message is a single sentence describing the one thing you most want your audience to know or do. Social media asks you to take that same sentence and adapt it into posts of different lengths and different tones, because different platforms have different conventions for how people write and read there.
In general terms, some platforms favor a short, punchy post: a sentence or two, written to be read in a few seconds while someone scrolls quickly past dozens of other posts. Other platforms favor a longer, more detailed post: several sentences or a short paragraph, giving you more room to explain context, add a personal voice, or tell a brief story around your core message. Some platforms sit comfortably in between. This lesson will not give you an exact character limit for any specific platform, because these limits are set by each platform's own company and do change over time. Instead, treat every platform's actual current posting limit as something to check for yourself, the same way you would check its accessibility: open the platform's compose box, and either read the character counter directly with your screen reader as you type, or check the platform's own help center for its current limit.
When you ask an AI tool to adapt your core message for a specific platform, describe the platform's general style in your prompt rather than assuming the AI tool already knows an exact, current limit. Tell it, for example, "Rewrite this message as a short, punchy post of about one to two sentences," or "Rewrite this message as a longer, more detailed post of about four to six sentences, with room for a bit of personal voice." This keeps you, not the AI tool's possibly outdated training data, in charge of a platform's real current conventions.
A Worked Example: Adapting One Message for a Shorter-Form and a Longer-Form Platform

Notice that both versions state the same core fact and keep the same honest tone, but the short-form version trims everything down to the sharpest possible point, while the long-form version adds context, motivation, and a warmer, more conversational voice. Neither version invents a new fact the other does not contain; they simply reshape the same true message for two different reading experiences.
What Alt Text Is and Why It Matters to a Blind Social Media User
Alt text, short for alternative text, is a short written description attached to an image so that a screen reader can announce what the image shows to someone who cannot see it. When an image has good alt text, your screen reader reads that description as you scroll past the image, and you get real information from it, just as a sighted user glances at the picture and understands it instantly. When an image has no alt text at all, most screen readers announce only the file name, something like "image1234.jpg," which tells you nothing about what is actually in the picture. When an image has bad alt text, filled with vague filler words, you get an announcement, but not real information.
You already know, from your own daily experience on social media, exactly how much this matters. You have almost certainly scrolled past a post where a friend, a business, or a public figure shared a photo with no description at all, and had no way to know what the image showed while everyone else in the comments was reacting to it. You have probably also encountered so-called alt text that was really just a generic label, such as "image" or "photo," telling you nothing beyond the fact that a picture exists. This is not a small inconvenience. Images carry real information and real emotion on social media: a product's appearance, a graph's data, a friend's new baby, a flyer's event details. Missing or bad alt text quietly cuts a blind user out of a significant part of what social media actually is.
Writing Strong Alt Text with AI: Draft, Then Edit
AI-powered image description tools and features use AI to look at a photograph and generate a spoken or written description of what it shows. That same kind of AI tool is exactly what you can use to draft alt text for your own social media posts, whether you are describing a photo you took yourself or an image you plan to share.
A strong piece of alt text has three qualities. It is specific, naming the actual, important details in the image rather than a vague generic label. It is concise, usually one short sentence or two, long enough to convey what matters and no longer. And it avoids filler phrases like "image of" or "photo of," since a screen reader already announces that an image is present before it reads the alt text, so restating "image of" wastes the reader's time without adding any information.
The most reliable way to write alt text with AI has two steps, and the second step matters just as much as the first. First, ask your AI image description tool to describe the picture. This first AI draft is a starting point, not a finished product. Second, read that draft with your screen reader and edit it critically: cut out any "image of" or "photo of" filler at the start, remove any detail that does not matter for your specific post's message, and add back any detail the AI tool missed that you know matters, such as a sign's exact wording or a fact about who appears in the photo. The weak version tells a blind reader nothing beyond the fact that an image exists. The unedited AI draft is accurate but cluttered with details, such as the weather, the pavement, and the shadows, that do not matter to this post's message. The edited final version keeps only what actually matters: who is in the photo, what the sign says, and where it was taken, in one clear sentence a screen reader can read quickly and use.
Post Scheduling and Why Consistency Matters
Scheduling means writing a post ahead of time and setting it to publish automatically at a chosen later date and time, instead of posting it manually the moment it is ready. Most major platforms offer some built-in scheduling feature, and a number of separate scheduling tools exist that work across several platforms at once. This lesson will not walk you through one specific scheduling tool's exact menu layout, since these interfaces change often and differ from one tool to the next. Instead, apply the same exploration habit from earlier in this lesson: when you try a scheduling tool, use your screen reader's elements list and heading navigation to find its compose box, its date and time fields, and its publish or schedule button, the same way you would explore any new piece of software. Check your screen reader's documentation for the exact commands if you are not sure.
Consistency, posting on a regular, predictable rhythm rather than in occasional bursts, matters because both a platform's own systems and its human audience reward it. A platform's own systems tend to show a poster's content to more people when that poster shows up regularly, and human followers build a habit of expecting and looking for your posts on a rhythm they can rely on. Scheduling helps you keep that consistent rhythm without needing to be online at the exact right moment every single day, since you can draft several posts in one focused sitting and let the schedule handle the timing.
Engagement Strategy: Asking Questions, Responding to Comments, and Being Present
Posting is only half of social media. Engagement means the two-way conversation that happens around your posts: comments, replies, questions, and reactions from other people. A social media presence that only broadcasts, posting message after message and never responding to anyone, tends to feel one-sided, and followers notice the difference between an account that talks at them and one that talks with them.
Three simple habits build real engagement. First, ask questions in your posts sometimes, inviting a direct response rather than only announcing information. A post that ends with a genuine question, such as asking followers what topic they want covered next, gives people an easy, natural reason to comment. Second, respond to comments, at least the ones that ask a real question or add something worth acknowledging. A reply does not need to be long: a short, genuine response shows a real person is present behind the account. Third, be present, meaning you actually read what people say to you and respond like yourself, rather than only ever posting pre-written, one-way announcements. AI can help you draft a thoughtful reply quickly when you are busy, using the same editing habit as everywhere else in this course: draft with AI, then read it back and make sure it still sounds like you before you send it.
Real Accessibility Barriers on Social Media
Even once you know how to check a platform's accessibility and write strong alt text for your own posts, real barriers remain on social media, and this lesson names them honestly rather than pretending they do not exist. The first is inconsistent alt text from other users: most people posting on social media never add alt text at all, and a platform's own automatic description, when one exists, is often a generic label with little real information. You cannot control what other people post, only what you post yourself.
The second is inaccessible embedded content: a video with no captions, a graphic made entirely of text with no alt text attached, or an interactive element, such as a poll or a story, that a screen reader cannot reach at all. These barriers often sit inside a platform's own features, not just in what individual users choose to post, and they are a real limit on what a blind user can access no matter how carefully any one poster writes.

You are not powerless against these barriers, and this lesson closes with three concrete ways to push back. First, add your own alt text consistently, on every image you post, even when it takes an extra minute. Every well-written piece of alt text you post is a small, visible model for sighted followers of what good accessibility looks like, and a growing number of them will start doing it too once they see it done well and understand why it matters.
Second, report accessibility bugs directly to the platform. When you find a button with no label, a feature your screen reader cannot reach, or a redesign that clearly broke something that used to work, most platforms have a way to report the specific problem, often inside the same help center you searched earlier in this lesson. A single report might not fix anything by itself, but accessibility improvements at real companies are often driven, in part, by the volume and clarity of user reports describing exactly what broke and how.
Third, consider accessible third-party clients where they exist: separate apps, built by outside developers rather than the platform's own company, that connect to a platform and sometimes offer a cleaner, more screen-reader-friendly experience than the platform's official app. Third-party clients come and go, and a platform can change its rules about which ones are allowed to connect at any time, so verify any third-party client's current accessibility and current access to the platform for yourself, the same exploration habit this whole lesson has built, before relying on it for anything important.
Where This Fits in the Bigger Picture
Social media sits at an interesting point in this course, because it is one of the most interface-sensitive topics you will study here. Almost everything else this course teaches, prompting, drafting, and verifying facts, will stay true for years. A specific platform's exact accessibility state, character limit, or menu layout might not stay true for even one year. The lasting skill this lesson teaches is not a fixed description of any one platform. It is the confident habit of checking any platform for yourself, right now, with tools you already know well: your screen reader's elements list, heading navigation, and a platform's own current help center. Carry that habit forward, and you will be equipped to use whichever platforms matter to you, however they look by the time you are reading this.

This week's portfolio piece asks you to produce a small set of platform-appropriate social media posts, adapting one clear core message into real, edited posts with real, edited alt text, exactly the pair of skills a social media manager uses every day.
